How to Shape Your Beret Like a Pro (Without Wrecking It)

The beret has been a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) uniform for many years. Wearers, whether still in active service or retired, should ensure that the beret stays in top condition. So, how do you maintain the beret's shape throughout?

Placing it on a beret display stand maintains its look and shape for longer. In this article, we highlight the differences between privately bought and ADF-issued berets, plus a step-by-step guide on shaping your beret like a pro.

Identify the Beret Type: Issued vs. Private Buy

Before you even start thinking about shaping the beret, you first have to know the type you’re working with. It can either be Australian Defence Force (ADF) issued or privately bought. Differences in quality will affect the shaping.

In the table below, we highlight a few differences between the two berets.

ADF Issued

Private Buy

Issued berets are built tough, with stiff fabric, and have a snug band.

Most are pre-softened, making shaping easier.

It comes in a one-size-fits-all and can be challenging to shape.

The size is a perfect fit since you get to choose.

Once they set, the shape holds longer.

Tidier once the berets are set, and they easily maintain their shape. But it will depend on the quality of the fabric.

Step-by-Step Advice on Shaping Your Beret

Shaping a beret for display is a different game from shaping it for wear. While comfort might not really matter when the beret is for display, looks and longevity do, especially if you still want that sharp and clean look.

We highlight the steps to follow for shaping your beret without damaging the fabric or badge.

  1. Wet the Beret

Give your beret a light soak in cold water or use a spray bottle to loosen the fabric. Putting it in hot water will shrink the beret. The primary goal for soaking the beret is to make it easier to mould.

Some Veterans advise adding vinegar to set the beret's shape, though this is optional. Remove the beret and gently press the excess water. Don’t wring it to avoid twisting it out of shape. Alternatively, use a towel to blot it dry.

  1. Position the Badge

Before proceeding to shape the beret, we recommend wearing cotton gloves or ensuring your hands are totally clean. Oils from your skin can leave marks on the beret’s fabric.

It’s important to confirm that the beret badge is exactly where it should be. If you wore the beret, the badge would be over the left eye. Some badges are removable, while others are not. Adjust the removable badge to the correct position.

  1. Use a Solid Base

You’ll need a solid base to shape the beret properly; don’t try to do it freehand. The ideal base is similar to the human head. Alternatively, use an old helmet or a skull beret holder to avoid weird lumps in the fabric.

Shaping on a flat surface will flatten the top or warp the fold. If the fabric dries, reshaping the beret would be a nightmare. Shaping on a rounded form gives you the right tuck over the right ear.

Pay extra attention to the curve and fold, especially if you will frame the beret. Once you get the right fold or curve, let it dry (usually overnight) before moving it to the beret display stand. If you’re in a hurry, you can use a blow dryer on low heat.

  1. Mount it like a Pro

Depending on where you want to display your beret, it's essential to mount it correctly to keep it looking sharp for the longest period. Start by choosing a background material that will not damage the beret’s fabric.

Use fabric-safe clips or small stitches to hold the beret fabric in place. We don’t recommend using glue to prevent fabric damage. If displaying in a shadow box, give the beret some breathing room.

Tips on How to Maintain the Beret's Shape

After all that work, you’ll want to maintain the shape crisp, whether storing it in a shadow box or an army beret stand. Here are a few tips to keep your beret in tip-top shape.

  • A damp beret will result in wrinkles. Ensure it's completely dry after shaping before displaying.
  • A light mist of starch spray will help hold everything in place, especially if using a skull or beret stand. Allow it to dry naturally.
  • Keep the military beret display away from windows or direct sunlight to prevent fading. The sun can bleach the colour and weaken the fabric.
  • Avoid touching the beret too much after shaping it—oils and dirt from your fingers can damage the fabric.
